Taoyuan Tu Di Gong Culture Museum, Taoyuan, Taiwan

Immortal Banquet: TU DIGONG & His Artist Friends

Curated and coordinated by contemporary artist Yao Jui-Chung, this exhibition brings together 25 artists in an in-depth dialogue between folk culture and contemporary art. It invites us to see belief not merely as a memory of the past, but as an ongoing form of creation within everyday life.

Through video, sound, materials, and participatory works, the exhibition guides visitors from the position of “viewer” to that of “participant,” allowing them to experience how folk culture continues to renew and negotiate itself in daily life, becoming a shared language among us.

As one of the deities most closely connected to local communities, Tu Di Gong reminds us that grand narratives are often hidden within the smallest details of everyday life. This exhibition invites you to return to a gentle question: when folk culture is still actively unfolding, can we understand it as a form of the contemporary in progress?

Yao Jui-Chung, the artist coordinator of this exhibition, has long engaged with Taiwanese folk religion and deity culture. His practice spans photography, installation, and video, and has frequently taken statues of deities, temples, and religious scenes as central subjects. For example, his representative series Incarnation, which received the 16th Taishin Arts Award, was developed through long-term visits to temples across Taiwan, where he photographed numerous giant deity statues. Through these images, the series reveals the relationship between divine imagery and the projection of human desire. His series Hell Plus and related works also employ fieldwork-based methods to photograph scenes of hell judgment found in Taiwanese temples, presenting the distinctive cultural aesthetics of life and death, good and evil, and the imagination within Taiwanese folk belief. This long-standing and continuous creative trajectory gives Yao a highly representative and research-worthy position at the intersection of contemporary art and folk religion.

Art is never a single answer, but a way of seeing the world. We welcome everyone to enter the exhibition space and form their own feelings and interpretations through its diverse perspectives.
